Exhaust options?

All aftermarket performance mufflers kind of sound similar to me. Do you have the exhaust resonator cut off already?

No. Many of us have had the exhaust resonator cut off for years. No CEL and no issue with state/emission inspections.

Huge difference in exhaust tone. I have the stock muffler with the resonator cut off and am pleased with the sound.

Also, removing the intake resonator will change the tone of the engine and exhaust as well.

Not only do you get a better sound, but it cleans up the rear end. You can buy an exhaust pipe, exhaust clamp, and bolt on exhaust tip from either Auto Zone or Advance Auto to use in place of the resonator. You can go side or rear exit.

Some members run with nothing after removing the resonator. All personal preference.

^^^ I would advise against this...

With no "tail-pipe", you would have the exhaust cavitating under the passenger cabin wihle sitting at idle.
Our safety inspections require the tail-pipe to exit beyond passenger cabin.

With a sawz-all, I was able to cut off my resonator right after the hanger, leaving the hanger in-tact.
I then welded the small end of a Dynomax 41437 into it,
and welded a length of 2.5" into that, and cut the pipe right at the edge of the bumper.

It added a bit of a rumble to the exhaust,
but I really like the fact that it no longer looks like an import from the rear :yes:.

I will replace the muffler with a magnaflow, when the time comes.

We have no such inspections and I let mine dump after the rear hanger for a good while and never smelled exhaust even idling on trails or in traffic.

Personally I changed over to custom catback with a hooker aerochamber and enjoyed the sound for years, but it seems after the years a weld is broken in the muffler and while no one else notices, I can hear it vibrate. Going to try a Magnaflow this time.

I ran with nothing after the hanger for a year or so and didn't have an issue either. I eventually got a pipe welded on but it broke off on Friday at lunch (salty NE Ohio)...I just said fark it and am leaving it as is.
 
I ran with it cut off for a while too. Once I did smell a bit of exhaust but I don't know if it was from that or the leak further up front near the cat. This was about a month before the pipe split on me and became a loud smelly nuisance :crazy:

Since I had to replace the whole mess (totally rusted out) I got the new pipe exiting behind the rear wheel.

It's the fumes you can't see or smell (aka Carbon Monoxide) that will kill you...

Fortunately for some of you, Chevy packs the seam-sealer well on the GMT floor-board... :wink:

My common-sense tells me that exhaust gasses are hot... heat rises...
If your exhaust is dumped under your car, the exhaust gas will rise and cavitate under the floor.
If there is a crack in that floor, the exhaust will enter the cabin.
If all of the windows are rolled up, then...

But hey, whatever floats your boat.

You have a good point, and I thought about this before removing the resonator...Then I thought about all the years of driving carbureted street cars/hot rods with turned down exhaust (before the rear axle)...I probably wouldn't ever want my kids breathing any of that stuff, but heck, I turned out ok...Except for a minor twitch now and then ;-)

LOL... Yupp, one of my Camaros had thrush header mufflers bolted onto the header flanges,,, no pipes. :no:

.... BUT, it didn't have A/C and I didn't drive it like that with the windows all rolled up :wink:

I went with 530552 Flowmaster, single in. , dual out.... Drone is annoying the first week, then settles down....
 
First understand that any car/truck manufacturer will not put an item on a vehicle if they don't have to.
Everyone seems to discuss the rumble/growl that they hear after cutting off the resonator.
When you sit in your truck & hear that "nice sound" it's because the exhaust sound is echoing under the vehicle & the vehicle is acting as a sound board for it. You may not even notice it that much from the outside.
As mentioned earlier, any exhaust dumping under the vehicle could potentially end up inside the car. An exhaust system can be designed/installed to sound good and pump the gases outside the influence of the bottom of the vehicle.
When I need to replace mine the exhaust will have a muffler (type - unknown) but no resonator few, if any sharp bends and exit out the rear.
