Going to drain rear diff and refill with new oil as it may have never been changed. No issues at present simply maintenance. 179k miles.

Which cover gasket should be used paper or metal based rubber gasket?

Much thanks!

Factory metal based with the rubber is the way to go. I just changed mine a few weeks ago. Be sure you can get the fill plug out first before you drain it.

Thanks, that seems obvious but wanted to be sure this was best even with an added silicone bead. What are the realistic options should the plug be rust locked? Any recommended techniques for removal.

Thanks!

Shops would weld a bolt in the plug. The heat also helps loosen it. There are specialized sockets with a true square that will fit better than a ratchet extension with its rounded corners.

Thanks I’ll try to find that true 3/8” square drive to avoid possible rounding.

No need to add silicone bead to the factory gasket. Just clean both the cover and the differential mating surfaces, spray with brake cleaner to remove oil residue, and torque to spec using a crossing pattern. I torqued mine down in 3 stages. It does not leak at all.
