Transmission dead... want to replace motor and tranny

Right before thanksgiving my transmission went out. I don't have all of the details in front of me, but apparently for a 2002, I am lucky I got 260k miles on my truck without issues earlier. So, that being said, I have a bad transmission, and a motor with 260k miles on it. I have put more into this truck than it's worth at this point. I would like to keep it. I am window shopping for a tranny and engine combination from a junk yard - plenty around here. I did a little researching and learned I am good with a 2003 and 2004 model engine and transmission as options, to avoid the 2002 transmission issue again.

I am looking for some community thumbs up or down on this and any other thoughts.

What was a bummer is during our little icemageddon we had last week, I couldn't use my truck. I have my wife's Hyundai Sonata, and my Porsche 944... needless to say, I didn't go anywhere for a while.

Cheers! Thanks in advance for viewing this and responding!

You can go as new as 2007 as long as you use your existing PCM. However, it seems like a reasonable mileage 2004-2005 is usually the best value.

Oh wow! Didn't know I could go to 2007! I will consider all options!

And I have a PCMforless tuned PCM. Would it be smart to have them reprogram it with whatever new engine I get? Suppose that is a question for them... What do you think?

A quick update. The TB is in the shop getting the 07 engine and transmission. I will let you know how it all turns out. Hopefully no goofy surprises.

It'd be interesting to hear what they say.

From my perspective, the 2002 computer versus the 2007 computer are so different that you can't even really compare the tunes. If you were my customer, I'd probably suggest you stick with what you have. If you have the $$$/time the best thing to do would be to get a road tune with the new setup.

The upgrade/swap to an 07 is only costing $2k. It is still a lot but a heck of a lot less than typical.

PAM For Less has told me to stick with my 02 computer because of sensor differencs.

So unless I find someone who knows how to rewrite those codes, I will be good with my 02 pcm.

So I got her back today. The mechanic was able to get an 06 engine and transmission, installed $2100. It runs great and it's a lot quieter than my 260k miles 02 motor. This engine and transmission has just over 100k on them.

The gas in there is old, since Thanksgiving, so I will fill up tomorrow with premium and drive it to work. So nice to have her back! I have a boy scout event this weekend I need it for.

After driving my 84 944 since Thanksgiving my TB feels huge! And I remember now what suspension work it needs now. :)

Yay!
